School Crest

 material crest pros.jpg

The school crest was designed by Miss M Grant who was Head of the Art Department when the school opened in 1960. Miss Grant left us to become a missionary nun and she is now in charge of her order of nuns in Ireland.

The symbols on the crest are all connected with the life of St Colmcille who is the patron saint of the school.

The School Crest

Colmcille means dove which is a symbol of peace.

The Celtic cross was used by the monks to teach heathens about Christianity.

The book represents the Book of Kells which Colmcille copied without permission. Because of this Colmcille was sent away from Ireland .

The Oak leaf is used because Colmcille built his first Church in an oak grove.

Doire and Iona are places where Colmcille spent most of his life.
